I met a new friend recently. She is existing in a hospital bed, unable to use her twisted and weakened body… ventilators… disease… a physically hopeless and heartbreaking scenario.
Our small group sang ‘His Eye Is On the Sparrow’, and we gathered around her bedside, ‘her world’, to pray. Teeth aren’t what makes a smile ‘beautiful’… It’s a certain gentle, gracious spirit and inner soul of a person surrendered to His will.
She’d been a pastor’s wife, encouraging others through their trials. If she only knew what an encouragement she still is! There was undeniably so much joy in that small, dark room, that words can’t describe it.
My new friend has gotten it right. It’s what happens ‘inside’ of a person that truly determines who they are. I witnessed ‘true beauty’ today.
‘So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. For this light momentary affliction is preparing us for an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison… (from 2 Corinthians 4:16-17)
