Bunkhouse at Living Hope: Vollintine Evergreen

Ever since Living Hope took on the old McLean Baptist Church building in Vollintine Evergreen, the plan has never been for the Living Hope Church plant to be the sole tenant. The leaders of Living Hope have a vision of the building housing other organizations that serve to better the neighborhood and the city. Over bunkhousethe short few years that Living Hope has had the building it has already exceeded many expectations for what it can do for the neighborhood and for Memphis. Multiple organizations have invested time and money toward making the building and the neighborhood their home. These organizations are great partners who are working alongside Living Hope: Vollintine Evergreen to make the neighborhood better.

Last week, we celebrated the continuation of the vision with the opening for the Serve901 Bunkhouse. The bunkhouse is located in one of the basements of the 60,000 square foot building. This is a space that not long ago was far from inhabitable and filled with decades of debris that were no longer needed by the church. The bunkhouse is now a beautiful space that sleeps over one-hundred people, has seven showers, a laundry room, and a large break room with a kitchenette that can be used for meals, gatherings, or just relaxing. Most importantly, this space can have a great impact for the community. The bunkhouse will primarily be used by Serve901 to house student attachmentmission trips up to thirty weeks out of the year. This will bring thousands of volunteers through Vollintine Evergreen who will participate in meeting needs there and around Memphis. Serve901 brings in students with the hope that some of them will fall in love with Memphis and move here permanently when they are done with school, or at least learn to love the city in which they live as we love Memphis.

We have already seen an impact from volunteers with Serve901 as they have assisted with painting and other projects around the property. They will continue to be visible throughout the neighborhood for years to come.

The bunkhouse will also be used by Living Hope: Piperton and St. George’s Independent School. Living Hope has been sending teams to Vollintine Evergreen to serve alongside our brothers and sisters in the city for years. Many of our students have been going there for Trailblazers over the summer and in some instances staying in the very same basement that has been greatly improved. This will be a great space to continue such efforts alongside LH:VE, and you will hear more about these opportunities in the future. St. George’s will use the space for upper school students throughout the year as well through urban retreats, service projects, and offering classes.

Thank you to everyone who gave of their time and resources to make this possible. Praise God for his mission that is going forth in Vollintine Evergreen, and please join with me in praying for God to continue to use this space and this building in mighty ways for His glory!

Deacon Nominations

We are completing the season of nominations for Deacon candidates at Living Hope Piperton. We are hoping for every small group to wrestle with the question of who in their group is called to serve the church in this way. If you would like to nominate yourself or someone else to serve as a deacon, please talk to that person first, then let the elders know by Sunday, November 6th. You can talk to any of the elders or email elders@lhchurch.com.

The LH360: REACH giving program began May 1! If you consider LH your home and have yet to pledge, please prayerfully consider joining us in REACH. You can find out more at lh360.lhchurch.com. Pledged giving continues over the next 36 months according to your pledge. Pledged and non-pledged gifts can be made online or by check and cash.

The Open Circle Workshop

This interactive event, on Sunday, November 13 or Wednesday, November 16, is designed to help your small group open its circle to those who are not in Christ or not in community. Get your group together to come one of these two nights! Sunday’s workshop will be from 5pm to 7pm; Wednesday’s will be from 6:15pm to 8:15pm. Childcare is provided for both nights. You are also welcome to join us if you are not yet in a Small Group; there will be much to gain from the workshop for you! Sign up at the Mission Workshop or by emailing gjackson@lhchurch.com.

Becoming a Member of Living Hope

Along with attending a Discover Living Hope class,
our membership process includes completing three classes online or “live” during the 9am or 10:45am hours. We prefer you attend these classes in person, so you can interact with new people and ask questions of our pastors and elders. The “live” classes begin this morning. You can start the online process anytime by visiting lhchurch.com and clicking on the “Online Membership” link on the home page.

Open Prayer with the Elders

We will gather to pray this Tuesday, November 1st, from 6-7pm. This month’s focus is on praying for those that are caring for aging parents.
